KyPass App Reviews

Its OK

Most of the KeePass compatable apps have a bunch of features that one doesnt, like: + timed autolock of the DB + timed clearing of the clipboard + locking the DB without closing it Given the $8 price, I expected a more complete app. $2 would have been more fair for the features implemented. Installing the Safari plugin is also an issue. The install button in the prefs dialog take you to a website that tells you to use hte button in the prefs dialog to install the extension. No actual extension found.

Probably the best KeePass client for Mac by default, but a long ways to go.

The state of KeePass clients on Mac OS X is, to be honest, dire, especially for KeePass 2.x DB compatible ones. KyPass Companion is probably the best option - in fact, as far as I can tell, if you want KeePassHttp support, its the only option. Which is probably why the developer is charging a rather high price for it, despite it being quite rough around the edges and still having a lot of issues: 1. Handling of databases is just not very good in general. The app does not automatically open the last used database, and the File > Open Recent menu seems to do nothing, as it is never populated when I start the application. No timed auto-lock. 2. The width of the left column for folder/category names is static, which means any longer names will be cut off. 3. Sorting within folders/categories basically just does not work. When you click on a folder, the columns might indicate that its sorted by Title, but its actually not. It will properly sort if you click on the header, but when you switch to another folder and then back, it will be reset again. 4. Right clicking on an entry will not allow you to edit it unless you left click to select it first. 5. The Properties tab in Edit Entry is just blank. To be honest, this feels like an incomplete piece of software bumped up to version 1.0 just so it could be put on the App Store and be charged for - something that those who have used the beta versions can attest to. There is very little difference between 1.0 and the most recent beta versions, and all of the previously mentioned issues were in there too. That, combined with the rather high price tag, is quite disappointing. Its a usable application, but I very much hope the developer strives for major improvements quickly.

Good Mac Client

This is the best Mac client for KyPass DB’s I have seen. Other softwares manage passwords better, but none go across devices and use an open source DB schema

Great App

Initially couldn’t get it to work but now it’s great! Excellent App, easy to use, I transferred over from Keepass on PC when I got my new MAC, love it!

Buggy

After using the beta version for a while, I was hoping version 1.1 would be better. That doesn’t seem to be the case. There seem to be numerous bugs in this release: When I try to delete a group, nothing happens. When I try to move an entry from one group to another, it doesn’t move the entry and creates a duplicate entry in the original location. Now I’m not sure I want to entrust all my important password information to this app.

Fatal bug and no support

I love how this software gives me native support for my KeePass files, but there is a bug which is making this app almost unusable with each coming day. For whatever reason, my KPDX file is growing exponentially every time I save! It started with around 160KB (from when I was using KeePass for Windows), and I kid you not, the file has reached a size of 1.21GB! It takes 5 minutes to load and save, and this is running on a brand new MacBook Pro. What’s more, support is terrible - I haven’t heard back in 3 weeks. I would stay away from this software until the developer addresses the issue and/or provides good support. (I will edit my review when applicable)

The Best in a Sea of Mediocrity

For what it does, KyPass Companion is solid and stable on OS X 10.9. Where is falls short is in look, feel and polish overall. This feels like a very rushed, slapped-together application that DOES offer some nice features but the overall experience isn’t great. Yes, the icons for the entries can be updated from the corresponding URL, however the changes aren’t permanent, often reverting back to the default icon multiple times during a session. Granted, not a big deal but annoying. The password generator automatically generates a new password the first time you click in the text box. It shouldn’t. There’s a ‘generate new password’ button on the right, when I click into the password text box nothing should change. Again, annoying. There are several little bugs along these lines that are simply annoying while not posing a security risk or affecting the stability of the OS. Where it DOES shine is the iCloud sync feature, sharing the database seamlessly to my iPhone through the KyPass 3 app. Very nice, quick to update and easy to access from one platform to the other. Basically, it does what it’s supposed to, there’s not really anything in the way of an alternative so until such time as there IS, I’ll continue using KyPass Companion. As soon as an attractive alternative is offered I’ll definitely move on unless changes are made here.

Latest update breaks chromelpass integration...

Not sure who to blame here, but clearly not enough coordination/testing seems to have gone into ensuring interoperability between these two applications (If it hasnt been tested, or isnt meant to work, then removing the button to install the chromelpass extension inside the KyPass Companion preferences --> extensions should be removed, along with a warning prior to upgrade..). Also, the "support" website is particularly useless, as there doesnt appear to be a single response to a number of legitimate requests, and Ive still yet to see an update from a "support" inquiry I submitted 8 months ago. Id expect a lot more from a paid app.

Even worse….

My original review was 2 stars in hopes that several glaring bugs could be fixed, unfortunately the new version doesnt seem to have fixed any, and has added new even more annyoing bugs. For example, we can now auto-lock the password file after 5 minutes of inactivity (default), but even though there is a checkbox to disable that, it gets rechecked as soon as you close the Preferences window. The "support" site is a joke, at best, and for $7.99 seeing *more* bugs with each release just isnt acceptable. Save your money if you havent bought this yet, and wait for some bug fixes to be confirmed, or wait for the author to reprice at something reasonable for the current version - $0.99 perhaps.

Irritatingly so-so

The app is clearly half-baked. The most irritating aspect is this - you open a dp, browse to key file, enter passphrase, and in about an hour the DB is automatically closed, and you have to repeat these steps to open it up again.

On the way, but still a lot of work to do...

Auto-locking has implemented in last release, which fixes a major security concern. That’s good. Now next step, please add a few features to improve the usability, like: 1) Remember the last used key file (if using a key file to encrypt the database). It’s really a pain to browse and select the key file every time the DB is opened 2) Add a way to copy custom fields to the clipboard, like in the Windows version. Many websites need more than just a name and a password. For instance frequent flyer account has name, password and card number. Name and password can be copied easily to the clipboard by double-click, but to get the card number (stored in the advanced tab custom attributes) it is very painful. In the Windows version this is very easy by right-click on the entry and copy the custom field. With Kypass, this is very painful (need to open the advanced tab, select manually the string and copy it manually) 3) Add a preview of the database entry, showing also the Notes field, in the bottom half of the screen (like in the window version). There are frequently useful information stored in the Notes (like for instance answers to security questions). It is very handy to see them just by selecting the entry and not need to edit the entry to see the notes. I know you might be very busy, but I wish new releases with such improvements could be released quicker. Today it is the only Mac alternative to Keepass, keep this place and don’t let you take this place by otehrs that could be (easily) faster than you. But this needs to be a bit more aggressive and customer oriented. It’s an investment and return of investment might only come later. 3 stars (I think my rating for previous version was 2 stars). There is some potential but still long way to go. Take the chance and make a professional app! Thank you Gerd

Current version cannot open databases

This app was fairly decent. The most recent update completely broke the ability to open databases though; which makes the app completely useless. Hopefully the developer fixes this soon.

Can’t Copy Passwords anymore since update to version 1.3

Used this program daily, until I got the update to version 1.3 yesterday. You used to be able to double click on a password and it was automaticly added to your memory. This feature is now gone or not working anymore. Please bring it back!

Can no longer open kdbx file with 1.3

Had no issues with 1.2 … push OK and nothing happens.

Really good now

This product has been refined and improved to the point where it is clearly stable and works very well. I use it exclusively on my Mac for all my passwords, and I’m very delighted with how it works. I want to say that there is an incompatibility if you also want to use Keepass 2 alpha 5 version. That program adds extra information to maintain a “history” and “recycle bin” to the database, and Kypass can’t really handle that. My 1 mb ballooned up to 70 mb, but this is clearly NOT the fault of Kypass. This is just a warning not to use Keepass Alpha on the same database you use with Kypass.

WARNING! constant password database corruption!!

I’ve been using KyPass Companion for many months and this app corrupts my password database every few weeks. Although I have backups in Time Machine, I still lose some passwords every time!! Even worse, when I wanted to move away from this app, I found out the Export function didn’t work at all!! This’s totally unacceptable for a password manager app. Even it’s the only option that has browser support, I’m going back to my old KeePassX.

Corrupt Database?

I have been using KyPass Companion for the past several months, and all of a sudden I am getting “Password invalid” messages. I was quite happy with it until it disallowed access to every password that I have. Moving on to something else.

Decent supplement to KeePass Pro, but not perfect

It works well and I really like the Keychain integration so I don’t need to remember a bunch of passwords to open my various files. The search is fast and effective. The biggest complaint I have against it is that the interface is difficult to navigate. Instead of getting a tree view of your various categories it only shows you one category or sub-category at a time, making it difficult to work with a complicated category structure. Providing the option for a tree view would make it near perfect for my use as it would bring the interface close to that of KeePass.

Unusable User Interface

This app used to be great, but since the latest update, the user interface is barely functional. - Text entered in the search bar is invisble - Ctrl + Click menus appear only for an instant. - The menus are all grey. If you kow all the keyboard short cuts, you can kind of make it work, but it’s a frustrating experience.

Pretty good value

i’ve been using kypass with a keepass v2 file via dropbox and chromelpass for ~6months now. It has been very reliable and managing the database and adding passwords have been easy. The only thing missing that I would like to see is integration w/safari. I know that it was in a previous version, but i guess apple had changed how safari worked and it broke the extension. It would be really nice to have it back, then I would give it 5 stars! Regardless, it is still a great alternative to many more expensive password managers and the best keepass port for mac that I have found so far, no regrets on my purchase of this software.
